| The 2nd Annual Avar Press Literary Essay Scholarships for College Students Rules & Regulations 1. Avar Press is seeking to recognize, encourage, and reward scholarship among college students by offering the Avar Press Xen Literary Essay Scholarships (hereafter known as the Scholarship), seeking essays, as follows: 2. Topic: all essays must be non-fiction and original work, analyzing any single aspect of D.J. Solomon's Xen: Ancient English Edition, ISBN 0976066009, Avar Press, 2004. The use of the essay as part of the writer's routine school work in any capacity is permitted. The reader's guide and study guide available on the xenbook.com website may be useful to entrants for consideration of possible topics but these are not meant to be limiting in any fashion. 3. Eligibility: the Scholarship is open to all college students who are matriculated at the time of entry, anywhere in the world, irrespective of citizenship or place of study. 4. The Scholarship is not open to any persons, or their relatives, previously or currently affiliated with Avar Press in any capacity. 5. There is no entry fee to the writer or parents/guardians whatsoever. No funds will be solicited by Avar Press now or at any time in the future with regard to this Scholarship. 6. Copyright of each essay remains with the writer, whether winning or not. Avar Press will not be able to use any essay without future written permission from the writer, except as stated below in Rule #11, for winning essays regarding publication. 7. Submissions must be 1250-1500 words and must be submitted by e-mail to scholarship@avarpress.com, as part of the message, NOT as an attachment; no attachments will be opened. The entrant's full name, address, name & address of college, level of study, planned year of graduation, and major will also be required as part of the text message and all submissions must be in English. The subject for the e-mail should be: "College essay for Xen scholarships 2008." By submitting an entry, the applicant explicitly attests to his or her having read and be bound by the 2008 college level rules and regulations for the Scholarship. 8. An official transcript from the registrar's office must be forwarded to and received by Avar Press at P.O. Box 1993, Whiteville, NC 28472, USA, postmarked by the deadline for an entry to be complete and warrant reading and consideration; this must be done at the entrant's expense. The entrant's actively enrolled status at the institution must be discernible in English; this is merely for documentation purposes since grades and course of study are otherwise of no significance in the judging. 9. If the writer is younger than 18 (eighteen) years old at the time of entry, submissions must also include a printed copy of this agreement (Scholarship form), which can be printed by clicking here for a printer friendly version, and must be signed by the writer as well as by a legal guardian or parent . Copies of this Scholarship form are available over the Internet as well as from Avar Press, P.O. Box 1993, Whiteville, NC 28472, by sending a self addressed stamped envelope along with your request. 10. Deadline: each essay must be received by e-mail sent to scholarship@avarpress.com as well as the transcript sent to the Avar Press postal box by January 31, 2008. Avar Press maintains no responsibility for entries or transcripts not received; confirmation of receipt of the essay as well as the transcript will be provided by e-mail. 11. Publication of the essays will be on the xenbook.com website, upon timely announcement of the winners, which should be on or before March 31, 2008. Citations of this publication may be used by the winners in any fashion they choose. Avar Press may, at its sole discretion, choose to publish one or more of the essays in a future paper printing of Xen, either as part of a forward, addendum, or errata, or as a separate text of literary criticism, or in another electronic or digital format, always with appropriate attribution to the writer, without further compensation in any fashion. The writer expressly grants Avar Press this permission by participating with a submission. 12. Cash awards: there will be 3 winners: first place, second place, third place; they will be awarded as such, published as such, and each winner will receive $1000.00, $750.00, or $500.00, respectively, in US funds. These cash prizes will be payable to the winner and will be unrestricted. 13. Judging: the essays will be judged by the editorial staff of Avar Press; their decisions are final. No discussion of or rationale for their decisions will be warranted, required, or forthcoming. Judging will be based on originality and detail of the analysis. Entries must be non-fiction and must not be a critique or book report. 14. All entries and transcripts become the property of Avar Press, cannot be returned to the writer, but will be destroyed by routine office shredder; the copyright of all essays, winning or not, remains with the respective writer. 15. Avar Press is not responsible for any essays received in any damaged or compromised condition for whatever reason. 17. While seeking to reward scholarship, Avar Press must maintain the position that only outstanding essays will be awarded first, second, and third prizes. Avar Press reserves the right to reward only two, one, or even none of the essays, at its sole discretion. 18.
