                                      2009 Rules & Regulations

1.  Avar Press is seeking to recognize, encourage, and reward scholarship in US &
Canadian high school students by offering the Avar Press Literary Essay Scholarships
(hereafter known as the Scholarship), seeking essays, as follows:
2.
Topic: all essays must be non-fiction and original work, analyzing a single aspect of
D.J. Solomon's
Xen: Ancient English Edition, ISBN 0976066009, Avar Press, 2004.
Entrants may choose one of the following:
a.  Discuss how
Xen is a satire of the "new world order."
b.  Compare and contrast
Xen to at least two other utopia/dystopian novels.
c.  Is the future world of
Xen utopian or dystopian, sterile and without the desire for
aggressiveness or physical acumen, to paraphrase previous winner, Ian Harris? Discuss
this in detail.
d.  A topic of one's own choosing
that analyzes a single aspect of Xen.
The use of the essay as part of the writer's routine school work in any capacity is
permitted.
3.
Eligibility: the Scholarship is open to all US & Canadian high school students who are
members of the classes 2009 or 2010, including home schoolers.
4.  The Scholarship is not open to any persons, or their relatives, previously or currently
affiliated with Avar Press in any capacity.  Nor are any previous winners permitted to enter.
5.  There is no entry fee or cost to the writer, parents/guardians, or school  whatsoever.
No funds will be solicited by Avar Press now or at any time in the future with regard to this
Scholarship.
6.  Copyright of each essay remains with the writer, whether winning or not.  Avar Press will
not be able to use any essay without future written permission from the writer, except as
stated below in Rule #11, for winning essays regarding publication.
7.  Submissions must be
1250-1500 words on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper, Times Roman
type, size 12, with 1" margins, double spaced; a cover sheet must include the title, writer's

name at the top left and the page number at the top right, beginning with page 2.
Footnotes or bibliography, if any, should be attached as an additional page or pages at
the end of the essay and do not count in the overall size limitations.  Entries must be
stapled together, along with the two other requirements placed on top; the entries are not
to be bound or otherwise covered in any fashion.
8.  A letter from the writer's school, on school letterhead, must accompany the application,
attesting to their current grade level & currently enrolled status at the institution, at the time
of the submission; this may come from a principal, guidance counsellor, or teacher.  Home
schoolers must submit a letter stating their intended year of graduation from their teacher.
9.  Submissions must also include a printed copy of this agreement (Scholarship form),
which can be printed by clicking
