The 3rd Annual Avar Press Literary Essay Scholarships for High School

                                                      Rules & Regulations

1.  Avar Press is seeking to recognize, encourage, and reward scholarship in US & Canadian high school
students by offering the Avar Press Literary Essay Scholarships (hereafter known as the Scholarship),
seeking essays, as follows:

Topic: all essays must be non-fiction and original work, analyzing any single aspect of D.J.
Solomon's
Xen: Ancient English Edition, ISBN 0976066009, Avar Press, 2004.  The use of the essay as
part of the writer's routine school work in any capacity is permitted.  The reader's guide and study guide
available on the xenbook.com website may be useful to entrants for consideration of possible topics but
these are not meant to be limiting in any fashion.

Eligibility: the Scholarship is open to all US & Canadian high school students who are members of the
classes 2008 or 2009, including home schoolers.
4.  The Scholarship is not open to any persons, or their relatives, previously or currently affiliated with
Avar Press in any capacity.  Nor are any previous winners permitted to enter.
5.  There is no entry fee or cost to the writer, parents/guardians, or school  whatsoever.  No funds will be
solicited by Avar Press now or at any time in the future with regard to this Scholarship.
6.  Copyright of each essay remains with the writer, whether winning or not.  Avar Press will not be able to
use any essay without future written permission from the writer, except as stated below in Rule #11, for
winning essays regarding publication.
7.  Submissions must be
1250-1500 words on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper, Times Roman type, size 12, with
1" margins, double spaced; a cover sheet must include the title, writer's name & address, and high school
name & address; each page must include the writer's full name at the top left and the page number at the
top right, beginning with page 2.  Footnotes or bibliography, if any, should be attached as an additional
page or pages at the end of the essay and do not count in the overall size limitations.  Entries must be
stapled together, along with the two other requirements placed on top; the entries are not to be bound or
otherwise covered in any fashion.
8.  A letter from the writer's school, on school letterhead, must accompany the application, attesting to
their current grade level & currently enrolled status at the institution, at the time of the submission; this
may come from a principal, guidance counsellor, or teacher.  Home schoolers must submit a letter stating
their intended year of graduation from their teacher.
9.  Submissions must also include a printed copy of this agreement (Scholarship form), which can be
printed from the Avar Press website and must be signed by the writer as well as by a legal guardian or
parent.   Copies of this Scholarship form are available over the Internet as well as from Avar Press, P.O.
Box 1993, Whiteville, NC 28472, by sending a self addressed stamped envelope along with your request.

Deadline: each essay must be received at the following address postmarked by May 15, 2008:
Avar Press, P.O. Box 1993, Whiteville, NC 28472.  All entries must be received by USPS, not by e-mail,
other courier, or delivery service.  Entries must be on printed paper; no discs, CDs, or e-mail entries will
be considered; no discs or CDs will be returned and will be discarded, without effort to protect the
integrity, privacy, or copyright of any data contained thereon.  Avar Press maintains no responsibility for
entries not received; delivery confirmation is recommended but is up to each individual entrant.

Publication of the essays will be on the xenbook.com website, upon timely announcement of the
winners, which should be on or before September 1, 2008.  Citations of this publication may be used by
the winners in any fashion they choose.  Avar Press may, at its sole discretion, choose to publish one or
more of the essays in a future paper printing of
Xen, either as part of a forward, addendum, or errata, or
as a separate text of literary criticism, or in another electronic or digital format, always with appropriate
attribution to the writer, without further compensation in any fashion.  The writer expressly grants Avar
Press this permission by participating with a submission.
12.
Cash awards: there will be 3 winners: first place, second place, third place; they will be awarded as
such, published as such, and each winner will receive $1000.00, $750.00, or $500.00, respectively, in US
funds.  These cash prizes will be payable to the winner and will be unrestricted.  
Matching cash prizes
will also be awarded to any high school from which a winning essay is selected and from which are
submitted 20 (twenty) or more essays.  
13.
Judging: the essays will be judged by the editorial staff of Avar Press; their decisions are final.  No
discussion of or rationale for their decisions will be warranted, required, or forthcoming.  Judging will be
based on originality of the analysis.  Entries must be non-fiction and must not be a critique or book report.
14. All entries become the property of Avar Press, cannot be returned to the writer, but will be destroyed
by routine office shredder; the copyright of all essays, winning or not, remains with the respective writer.

16. Avar Press is not responsible for any essays received in any damaged or compromised condition for
whatever reason.
17. While seeking to reward scholarship, Avar Press must maintain the position that only outstanding
essays will be awarded first, second, and third prizes.  Avar Press reserves the right to reward only two,
one,  or even none of the essays, at its sole discretion.
18. This Scholarship competition is void where prohibited.
